Practical Guide

Visa Guide for UK Students

Post-Brexit reality-what UK passport holders actually need before interning abroad. No jargon.

Quick answer: internship visa requirements for UK students in 2026

USA requires a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa for paid internships (apply 3 to 4 months ahead, cost £200 to £450). Australia requires a Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) or a Temporary Activity Visa. EU countries allow 90 days visa-free under Schengen, but most require a national work permit or internship agreement for any placement, paid or unpaid. South Africa is 90 days visa-free for UK nationals. Canada needs an IEC Working Holiday or Co-op Work Permit. Always check the official embassy site for the current rules.

Post-Brexit: the landscape has changed

UK citizens are no longer EU members. For most European destinations, you now face the Schengen 90-day rule and may need additional documentation to work legally, even as an unpaid intern. This guide explains what that means for you, destination by destination.

No Visa Required-Direct Destinations

UK passport holders can visit these countries without a visa. Note: visiting without a visa does not automatically permit you to work-even in an unpaid internship. Always check the specific work authorisation requirements.

The 90-day visa-free entry does not authorise you to work. For an internship in Spain, France, Italy or Germany, you need a student or trainee visa. The exact requirements depend on whether your internship is paid or unpaid, and whether your UK university has a partnership agreement with the host company. We navigate this for you.

Turing Scheme-Get Your Internship Funded

The Turing Scheme replaces Erasmus+ for UK students

UK students can no longer access Erasmus+ funding. The Turing Scheme is the UK government's equivalent-covering travel and living costs for international placements. It's available through participating universities, not directly. Check with your placement or international office.

Your university will want learning agreements, internship confirmations, supervisor details, and reporting formats, so ask your host company for these early. Turing Scheme funding can help with placements in Europe, Australia, and beyond.
